The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen)

Dates: 17-Oct-2007

Time: 07:30 pm

Excellent cold war thriller about surveillance and cultural freedom in East Berlin under the Stasi (secret police). A film that manages to be both horrifying and humorous. Highly recommended.

In the early 1980’s, successful playwright Georg Dreyman and his actress lover Christa-Maria are popular stars in the socialist state who seem to toe the party line. When icy secret service agent Wiesler sets up a surveillance operation to listen in on them, he starts to lose his usual reserve and become involved in their lives.

A mixture of thriller, love story and dark comedy, see why this film received the Oscar for best foreign language film.

Volver

Dates: 07-Nov-2007

Time: 07:30 pm

Penelope Cruz stars in Almodovar's 2006 film

The film begins with two sisters, Raimunda (Penelope Cruz) and Sole (Lola Duenas) along with Raimunda's daughter visiting the grave of their parents who died in each other's arms in a fire. However, their elderly aunt is under the impression that the girls’ dead mother is looking after her. The mother (played by Almodovar regular Carmen Maura) soon appears to Sole. Meanwhile, Raimunda is getting rid of an abusive husband and trying to run a restaurant.

In a film that celebrates the collective strength of women, we can enjoy a top rate cast and think about the differences between urban Spain and country villages where Catholic superstition still affects the lives of women.

Men Should Weep

Dates: 05-Dec-2007 to 07-Dec-2007

Time: 07:30 pm

“Ena Lamont Stewart’s searing play is rich in contemporary echoes.” Guardian

After their visit to the Japanese Court last December with a hilarious version of The Mikado , Bathgate Theatre Company moves to the back courts of Glasgow in the 1930s.

Written by Ena Lamont Stewart in 1947, with a cast of nine women, four men and three children, this extraordinarily moving play depicts, through the eyes of the Morrison family, the harrowing effects of The Depression in Scotland.

At the centre is Maggie, the mother of seven children, who holds the family together while coping with unemployment, TB, problem children, nosy neighbours, a censorious sister and a hard to love mother in law.

This is a play without sentimentality but tempered by a spirited sense of humour.

You’ll weep with Maggie in her battle for survival but you’ll laugh with Granny, the weans and the neebors.

“It is an astonishing piece of work, warm hearted and scrupulously fair in its portrayal of a 1938 Glasgow. “ New Statesman

Regal 70th Anniversary film screening

Director: William Wyler

1938

1hr 44min

Bette Davis plays a Southern Belle, a role she got as a consolation prize for not winning the role of Scarlett O'Hara, but managed to win the 1938 Best Actress Oscar.  Her character Julie breaks all the rules and shocks polite society in an attempt to win the heart of handsome Henry Fonda.  In a film famous for its sets and costumes and a remarkable creation of a yellow fever epidemic, its greatest strength is Bette Davis's performance. Set in antebellum New Orleans during the early 1850's, this film follows Julie Marsden through her quest for social redemption on her own terms. Julie is a beautiful and free spirited, rapacious Southern belle who is sure of herself and controlling of her fiancé Preston Dillard, a successful young banker. Julie's sensitive but domineering personality--she does not want so much to hurt as to assert her independence--forces a wedge between Preston and herself. To win him back, she plays North against South amid a deadly epidemic of yellow fever which claims a surprising victim.

On Our Way to Lisbon

Isosceles Productions

On Our Way to Lisbon (or The Italian Job) tells the story of how, in 1967, Glasgow Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup with victory over the mighty Inter Milan. Two fans look back and fondly recreate how the Bhoys in Green and White beat the hardest team in the world and draped Europe in green, white and gold.

The whole mad and magnificent campaign comes to life as the two supporters become everything from a vicious Swiss football team to the entire population of Lisbon. Put on those scarves, dust off your passport and come with us once again as Celtic steam roll over the best teams in Europe to become the immortal Lisbon Lions.

"a two man play with a cast of thousands…physical theatre at its best…hilarious slow motion scenes…high octane stuff and marvellously executed".

Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas

supported by West Lothian Schools Folk Group

Master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser appears with the sizzlingly-talented California cellist Natalie Haas as they continue to pursue their resurrection and reinvention of the classic musical marriage between big and small fiddles. The duo’s near-telepathic interplay is dazzling both for its breathtaking technical prowess and its boundless dynamism.

“Fraser, one of the most respected of all exponents of the Scots fiddle, would look long and hard to find a more appropriate cellist as a partner. Haas can switch just as effortlessly as Fraser from a gentle singing tone to driving, dancing melody. A positive joy.”  The Scotsman

Orkestra del Sol

Dates: 16-Sep-2009

Time: 07:30 pm

Flamboyant, brassy and irresistibly euphoric.  It is their imaginative and captivating stage show that truly sets Orkestra del Sol apart – bursting with anarchic humour, wildly skilful musical arrangements and a roguish sense of theatre, the band has hit upon an explosive combination.  Blending the best of brass with the swinging sounds of New Orleans, the rolling rhythms of the Middle East or the bouncing beats of UK ska, Orkestra del Sol pack a punch and make mincemeat of musical categories. This is an inspired musical feast, a journey into the irresistible world of Orkestra del Sol. Globally inspired. Distilled in Scotland.

“Orkestra del Sol showed just how brilliantly they’ve caught the Zeitgeist... their on-stage music-making and theatricality is irresistible” The Scotsman

Singin' I'm No a Billy He's a Tim

By NLP Theatre A humorous and often poignant snapshot of the pervasive sectarian divide that persists in the west of Scotland.
What could be worse for a Celtic fan than being locked up in a police cell on the day of an Old Firm match?  For Tim, there is one thing worse – finding himself banged up with Billy, a fervent Rangers supporter.   Des Dillon`s hugely entertaining comedy takes our two protagonists on a journey of self discovery and highlights the nature of bigotry and sectarianism within the West of Scotland. “Hail Hail, We are the People!”

Al Hughes

Dates: 25-Mar-2010

Time: 07:30 pm

Al HughesMaking music that is modern, relevant and gathering praise from a growing number of well respected figures on the British music scene, this Scottish singer writes from his own perspective on topics which are very much of today.  Rooted in the Blues and soul tradition he has been compared by more than one reviewer to the legendary, late Rory Gallagher’s acoustic playing and also to both Chris Smither and TownesVan Zandt. Playing a variety of guitars, including a huge sounding, custom built 12 string resonator, Al’s music conjures  up a variety of moods, from forceful and raucous to gentle and wistful.  He has played concerts across the UK and Europe.

Times When I Bite: The Moira Monologues

Written and performed by Alan Bissett
Alan Bissett performs his own one-woman show, a series of stories from Falkirk’s hardest woman, Moira Bell.  Whether defending her ‘snookelums pookelums’ from the local rottweiler, attempting to seduce a teacher in the school where she works as a cleaner, or belting out Diana Ross for the Scotia karaoke night, Moira is hilarious and heart-warming company. A thoroughly entertaining performance from one of Scotland’s most exciting young writers.
‘A roaring theatrical success.   This is brilliant stuff…so funny that some in the audience were literally shouting with laughter… a character and a performance that will surely have a long continuing life.’
